Although scientists have learned who built the geoglyphs, they also want to know why these pictures were made.

When an American archaeologist found a headless body in a tomb near the lines, she knew she was on to something.

Human sacrifices involving decapitation were common at the Nasca temples, but why was this one near the geoglyphs?

Because of the climate, the Nasca had to deal with long droughts.

A lot of the geoglyphs show animals and smybols associated with water.

Using human sacrifice, the Nasca appealed to their gods to bring back the rains.

By examining the headless body, the archaeologist discovered that the man was a local, and he was buried with honor.

She and her team made the conclusion that he had offered his life for rain that would save his community.

With evidence of other kinds of offerings in the area,

archaeologists suggest that the Nasca Lines were built to honor the gods and act as open-air temples.

We now know who created the Nasca Lines and the most likely reason they were built.

However, not all of the questions about the geoglyphs have been answered.

The mysteries that the Nasca people left behind are as big as their amazing desert creations.
